MSZ’S ADOLESCENT PROGRAMME
MSZ is committed to ensuring adolescents aged 15-19 and young women aged 20-24years have equitable access to sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services and information. As a member of the national adolescent health technical working group, Marie Stopes Zambia (MSZ) works in collaboration with the government to deliver against the adolescent strategic plan and champion an enabling policy environment for adolescent friendly health services (ADFHS ) through our advocacy activities.
MSZ delivers contraception and HIV services to adolescents as part of the routine programming but also delivers services in youth specific settings, such as our DIVA Centres.
The divine diva’s project is designed to meet the needs of young women between 20-24 years old and adolescent girls aged 15-19.The divine divas educate the youths about personal hygiene, how to protect themselves against sexually transmitted diseases and sexual and reproductive health services that are available for them.
Teen pregnancy stands at 20% for urban girls and 36.4% for the rural based girls. And we have found only 10% of girls aged 15-19 use modern contraceptives. It is therefore the job of the divine divas to provide a guided journey for teens to access sexual reproductive health and contraceptive services. To achieve this, we have implemented three essential components to Diva services.
OUTREACH
Marie Stopes Zambia is committed to reaching underserved communities, bringing the highest quality health care services whenever they are needed. For some women, contraception services are out of reach because they cannot get to a place that provides that service. That is why our outreach teams take these services to remote communities. As of 2024, our outreach offices are in all 10 provinces of Zambia.
SOCIAL MARKETING
MSZ’s social marketing programme distributes registered MA drugs to 506 pharmacies across Zambia. MSZ implements a social marketing model focusing on the distribution of quality MA drugs and pregnancy test kits. In March 2012, MSZ introduced MSI’s own brand of MA drug known as Mariprist.
The social marketing of MA has provided MSZ with the opportunity to significantly expand access to SA. Working with regional distribution networks, MSZ provides quality assurance, particularly regarding the type of information clients receive from their purchase points to ensure correct and safe use of MA drugs. MSZ’s contact centre number is printed on all MA drugs so that women can contact MSZ if they are experiencing adverse side effects or need further advice on use of the drugs to private pharmacies and health centres.
PUBLIC SECTOR STRENGTHING (PSS)
MSZ is a key trusted implementing partner of the MOH, with whom MSZ works closely with across all its projects and service delivery channels partnering at national, provincial and district level. Under selected projects, MSZ works closely with the government in training public health providers on FP and SA service delivery, infection prevention and medical emergency management relating to FP provision.
MSZ also provides supportive supervison on on-going mentorship to all public providers who it trains and works with under the PSS channel. Recognizing the importance of sustainability in the public sector, MSZ works towards the transfer of FP skills including knowledge and capacity building on the provision of LARCs, something which most public providers are unable to provide. MSZ also recognizes the need for Value Clarification and Attitude Transformation ( VCAT ) trainings to omit negative attitudes especially towards FP provision for adolescents among public providers, to ensure client friendly service delivery. In 2021, MSZ supported public providers & facilities delivered just over 77,500 FP services and 6,600 SA services.
At Marie Stopes, we offer a wide range of modern contraceptive methods (e.g. morning after pill), safe abortion clinics as well as access to sexual and reproductive healthcare services at our conventiently-located centres.
